Cotacachi Indigenous dance video

Dance is a huge part of many cultures, but the indigenous dances of Cotacachi and elsewhere in Ecuador have even more significance.
Indigenous dances here are interlocked with the culture so that each dance expresses something important in the local culture. So we have dances to celebrate harvest, others at Easter and so it goes on.
The indigenous mayor in Cotacachi has made it a point to strengthen indigenous culture by organizing various events to show off the richness of culture here. To often in the past, other regimes under-valued indigenous culture and even the indigenous peoples themselves sometimes moved away from their roots towards the allure of western culture.
So, it was refreshing this past Sunday to visit an indigenous music and dance show in the local Cotacachi theater, attended of course by Auki Tituana, the local mayor.
