Cotacachi Hotel Information
May 5th, 2008 by Gary
Actually for such a small village Cotacachi seems to have the whole gamut of accomodation available apart from a hotel belonging to an international chain.
Gary and Merri’s very own Meson de las Flores offers a different kind of stay from any other in Cotacachi. Here the emphasis is on extremely friendly service, in a renovated colonial inn with a rustic feel.
The hotel rooms have all been refurbished and re-modelled using the existing woods. The central patio with outside tables and seating and the inside dining rooms occasionally attract 250 diners on a busy holiday weekend, such is the renown of the cuisine with Ecuadorian people. At other times the hotel is a haven of calm just 65 paces from the main square in town with La Matriz cathedral.
Gary and Merri have named the restaurant at Meson de las Flores ‘the Quinoa Cafe’ to reflect the extremely nutritious quinoa recipes now served at El Meson. You can read more at http://www.ecuadorliving.com/2008/04/16/cotacachi-hotels-without-restaurants.html
La Mirage Spa really is an extraordinary hotel and it would fit in right next to the finest spa hotels in the world. This is not just my Cotacachi hotel information or Gary or Merri saying this. It has received international recognition by becoming only one of 3 Relais & Chateaux hotels in all of South America! It is the only one in Ecuador. Peacocks strut in gardens, the menu is such that I personally struggle to choose each time I eat there and the spa treatments are the product of the owner’s very fertile imaginations and care for attention.
Cotacachi hotel information should of course mention the humbler institutions to. There is Hostal Munalla right at the center of town. I’d consider this a backpacker’s hostel. Then there are two more similar hostels in town, one called Hostal Bachita, which we will look at as well as we give complete information about Cotacachi hotels.
On the outside of town we seem to have a hotel which qualifies as a folly! Even the name suggests so – Hotel Primativo! Can you guess what that means? The owner had the idea to construct it in the style of an Incan fortress but apart from the fact that the Incans weren’t famous for using tons of concrete and also tended to finish their fortresses; I guess you can see the resemblance to a fortress if you stretch the imagination. Still, this hotel does boast nice grounds and amazing views.
As for names, one that is less self-deprecatory is the Hosteria Paradiso – Paradise Hotel. It is set in a nice area on the edge of town; comfortable cabins set in pleasant gardens.
There is also an hotel right on the main commercial street called Hotel Cotacachi. At the moment it’s for sale.
When we or others seek budget Cotacachi Hotel information accomodation then we recommend Hostal El Arbolito (Little tree) which is a new hostel with modern, clean and comfortable rooms. See tomorrow’s post.
A similar hostel, Suman Huasi, is owned by Jorge Quilumbaqui the builder of condos in Cotacachi. He built his own hostel before he started building condo buildings.
Finally, a little difficult to find but certainly useful Cotacachi hotel information – there is Rancho Santa Fe which is a very ambitious (for Ecuador) garden hotel on the edge of Cotacachi owned by the former owner of Meson de las Flores.
Rancho Santa Fe has 30 plus rooms and a restaurant and conference center for up to 200 guests. In addition there are tennis courts and a swimming pool. The hotel seems to be under-utilized most of the time but certainly has the facilities to hold large conferences and occasionally does so.
We of course hold our courses and seminars at Meson de las Flores and if there is one thing that stands out above all else at ‘El Meson’ it is the world class hospitality and friendliness which all the staff display towards all the guests. Come see what Ecuadorian hospitality is all about at Meson de las Flores soon and see why so many other guests have raved and can’t wait to get back to stay again. Steve.
