Ecuador constitution Views II
Oct 2nd, 2008 by Gary
Ecuador has a new constitution and we are sharing thoughts about what this means.
I shared my views at Ecuador’s New Constitution but I am not a political pundit of any sort. As a businessman I must be optimistic by nature and focus more on adapting to “what is” rather than “what might or could be”.
So I asked many of my friends in Ecuador, from many walks of life, what they think about Ecuador’s new constitution. Here is the second reply from an American businessman who has lived in Quito for many years with his Ecuadorian wife and two children who were born and raised in Ecuador.
Here are the views he shared:
Gary, I have not reviewed all 400 plus articles of this constitution but here are a few observations.
There will obviously be some good which will come of all this.
However, now there is over concentration of power in the Presidency which is dangerous and no congress for a check and balance. Supposedly there will be a mini congress of sorts likely composed of assembly people to fill this void.
Voting ability for 16 year olds, my first thought was that this is a group that is vunerable to brainwashing and thus in future the president can capatilize on this new segment to get more votes to remain in power.
Many articles in new constitution will be subject to interpertation by the Supreme Court to which the president will appoint people who are with his ideology. Anyone against him as has been seen in past legal positions or in his cabinet are promptly dismissed.
It apears there will be much assistance for small producers which is excellent. Plus the constitution sees more state involvement in the economics and social activity. Not certain how this will really work.
Any assistance to the current Social Security system and its hospitals will be welcome and this is an area which will supposedly be helped.
The real question. The “Yes” vote was won. Reality now sets in. Campaigning is over. What next?
Frankly I am uneasy with the new constitution although time will tell how it really works. It is number 20 and with many similar players so vamos a ver. (we will find out)
On a pure business level, the continual government enforced wage increases, double digit inflation, poor investment climate, and random robbery and assaults are no fun.
I still love the place but am looking forward to hopefully some positive changes.
There you have it, a view from an American in Quito for many years.
