Snapshots of Cotacachi
Jan 11th, 2009 by Gary
The religious holiday season is about to begin here in Cotacachi.
Carnival starts the festive season which begins in January immediately before Lent. Be careful. The favorite Carnival game for the kids is throwing water balloons. No target is exempt! There are public celebrations, parades and street parties.
People often wear costumes during the celebrations.
Lent then begins a forty-day period before Easter, starting Ash Wednesday. Lent begins on 25 February in 2009 and ends in April the day before Easter.
The parades usually revolve around Cotacachi Cathedral…quiet the night before no hint of what is to come.
nor will Merri and I see a celebration setting as the dawn rises. This is a view from our condo. East…
and south.
Our celebration is to walk early enjoying the quiet of the village before it awakens. his is one of the main streets we walk.
Then the barricades come up!
and the people of Cotacachi prepare to have fun!
The parades range from colorful…
to somber…
Often the children carry ancient pennants past on for many generations.
Yet mostly these parades are fun!
They are filled with earnestness…
bright colors…
music.
excitement.
From all the villages around Cotacachi the people come in their traditional clothes.
Diversity…
but with unity.
This is the Ecuadorian way.
Everyone is involved…old
and young alike.
Merri, I and the staff at Meson de las Flores in Cotacachi invite you to join us for these celebrations!
