Actually the drive from Cuenca to Vilcabamba is more like 5hrs – they’re still repairing the highway from some mudslides, and still paving a part of it.  Still not bad though.  I wish they’d get a flight between Loja and Cuenca, but alas that is not yet the case so if you want to get to/from Cuenca you have to fly via Guayaquil or Quito unfortunately.
