New Ecuador Visa Regulations Passed

Quito’s new Airport… this new air port coming… new visa regulations are already here.
When Americans, Canadians and most Europeans arrive at Quito or Guayaquil Airport, if they have not been to Ecuador for a year, they are automatically given a T3 tourist visa. This allows a person to stay 90 days.
Previously if a person wanted to stay in Ecuador longer than 90 days normally one had to return home and apply for a consular visa before getting a permanent resident visa. This required leaving Ecuador and getting the visa in one’s homeland.
Now you can apply direct in Ecuador with just the T3 visa.
Now the Ecuador visa regulations have once again changed. A reader just sent this note.
“Gary We am so excited about the new opportunities in Urcuqui ($1,000 to $2000 lots). We are chomping at the bit to see it in person and are shooting for May of this year.
The reasons I am writing to you are twofold. First, I read your post about Ecuador Visa updates and I wish to share an update re: the 9-2 Investment Visa that was emailed me. It is from his attorney, Dr. Marco Antonio Munos Mendieta of Munos & Munos Law Firm. I am hand copying it for you below:
“With the new immigration regulations (as of January 2011), all foreigners are now allowed to apply for the permanent residency using the Transit Visa called T-3. The T3 Visa is for 90 days and you have to apply for the 9-2 Investment Visa at least 30 days before the expiry of your current visa.
“This is different from the situation before which required people to first have successfully applied for the 12-9 Consular Visa in order to ‘Graduate’ to the 9-2 Investment Visa.
“If you are going to apply for the Investor’s Visa, then you need the property deed or the CD with at least $25,000 of investment with an additional $500 value being necessary for each dependent.

Ecuador visa procedures and regulations were revised in January after the immigration office was closed by the Ecuador government during a graft investigation. See more about this here.
