Ecuador Visa Warning

I am sending this Ecuador visa warning because we have seen a growing enforcement trend relating to Ecuador tourist visas.

A reader asked a question about Ecuador visas:  Hi Gary, I have so enjoyed your emails for 2 or 3 years now, they have become the highlight of my day. They give me “hope” and a dream.

My dream; to go to Ecuador and spend approx. 4 to 6 months, do an Export tour and purchase many items i.e. leather goods, alpaca goods, jewelry, wood items, etc. and ship home to a partner to sell here in Helena, MT.   I’m looking for an Export tour some time from November thru February.  My plan would be to go to Ecuador and spend my days searching around a good market area and then on a beautiful beach to see which area I like best.  Then decide if I would like to purchase to live part time or permanently so would include real estate tours also.  I was checking out visas today and one site said I did not need one for the 90 days?  I would like to stay longer (at least 180 days) and was wondering about a business visa?

Here is my reply.  Hi,  Re your visa… your tourist visa will allow you 90 days. You can get another 180 with an extended visa.  You must apply at least 30 days before the 90 day visa expires. I am not sure of cost but have asked our friend Floridalva Zambrano to explain. She is our attorney and is excellent.

Flori is available to answer question direct to Ecuador Living Club members. Learn how to enroll here.

This reader is an Ecuador Living club member and Flori sent this response:   As Gary mentions you can apply for a six months visa. You can do this at any of the Ecuadorean consulates in the US prior to your trip or upon your arrival in Ecuador. The government fee is $230 and we usually charge $150 to provide you legal assistance throughout the process. Best regards,  Flori.

Ecuador Visa Warning

Several readers… especially those who have multiple trips to Ecuador have sent an Ecuador visa warning.  “You are allowed 90 days total in 12 months” on a tourist visa.  If you exceed this, you WILL NOT be reminded or warned when you enter Ecuador a second time.  When you exit Ecuador, if you have been in the country more than 90 days during a 12 month period, you will be fined $400.

Take an example of visiting Ecuador for  60 days, returning home for eight months and then visiting Ecuador again. You’ll get your tourist visa stamp when you enter and it might appear that you have another 90 days to stay.  This does not appear to be the case at this time. If you stayed 31 days and headed back home… immigration will check the amount of time you have been in Ecuador for the previous 12 months. If it was 91 days… then you may face a $400 fine.

Ecuador Immigration law and visa regulations have changed quite a bit over the 15 years we have been coming in and out of Ecuador.  The way the rules are enforced have changed a lot in that time. As administrations change…  as heads of administrations come and go, the way rules are interpreted have shifted.  Stay informed and especially keep track of how long you are in Ecuador during each 12 month period… not necessarily in a calendar year.

See how the global economy’s darkest hour can create opportunity.

Gary
