Ecuador Police Comments
Is risk increasing in Quito?
Ecuador police in the historic center getting their briefing before going on duty
This reader sent me this note last week:
Gary,
Your comments on crime moving to Quito is quite valid. I have noticed more street crime over the past year. I have twice lost cell phones from what looked like innocent young people, well dressed; they were pickpockets. I hope that I have learned something from this. In August, alone, three of my close friends were robbed violently, one stabbed in the stomach, and one had a home invasion by 8 masked men in Cumbaya. Other than in the stabbing, guns were used. I normally don’t go out at night unless I use taxi door to door. Two of my lady friends have had the experience of being kidnapped and robbed. One now refuses to take a taxi.
The city has clearly bolstered police presence, particularly in tourist areas. Attached is a photo of police in the historic center getting their briefing before going on duty. The national police deploy 30 officers each day to patrol Carolina Park which I can see from my window. These officers walk, ride bicycles, motorcycles and horses. They also deploy dogs. As a result the park has become more safe.
Regarding concern for police, I often say hello to them and have always found them, city and national, to respond with friendly smiles and willingness to help.
I attribute the street crime to the sinking economy and unemployment. Sad but true.
In every city… in every place, crime comes and crime goes… then shifts from place to place within each city…. a never ending roulette criminals… law abiding citizens…. police. If this reader is correct… in Quito there is more risk now.
Also remember… problems create opportunity. If you live or are planning to live in Ecuador how can increased crime create opportunity? Do you have ideas to share. email me. See more on how to earn extra income at “Micro Business Risk“.
