Sunrises are great at our Blue Ridge farm this time of year. This is the view we get from my home office in North Carolina.  This is great if you like temperatures in the teens and even below zero plus a lot of…

Horse-Creek

snow and ice on that mile long dirt road that leads to the house.

This is why our books, reports, newsletters and website have always focused around the premise that the sun always shines somewhere.

Sunsets are also nice from the terrace of our Cotacachi studio and they look pretty good when the storms are hitting up north!

One of my greatest privileges is that I am allowed to work in so many places where the sun shines, metaphorically and economically.

Here is the sunrise I enjoy… as I work at our Florida home office.

Social Networking is Not Just for Kids

By Michelle Toole

With the recent explosion of social networking sites and users we are fast learning that social networking is not just for the kids.  So who is using social networking sites and how does this affect your business? Good question.

But first let’s define social networks.  Simply put social networks refer to a community or social structure made up of individuals or organizations that are connected by one or more specific types of interdependency such as  friendship, kinship, values, working relationships, ideas, interests, prestige or business.

Social networking is nothing new, in years past the rolodex was your social networking tool today it just so happens to be the internet.  And the old adage of ‘it’s not just about what you know but WHO you know and how well you use those relationships’ certainly still holds true and it is showing itself in the social networking arena.

Social networking has come a long way over the past 5 years.  With Facebook having over 5 million members, Twitter having over 75 million users  and Linkedln with 70 million users one can no longer ignore social networking as a potential business resource.   The real question is: What can social networking do for your business, on-line or offline? Let’s review a few statistics to fully grasp the role social networking is playing in both our personal and professional lives.

According to Harris Interactive:

·      9 out of 10 (87%) online adults use social media
·      The number of people who are visiting social media sites has increased by 24% over the last year.
·      The average visitor spends 66% more time on these sites than they did a year ago.
·      Facebook is the world’s most visited social media brand with 54% of the world’s internet population visiting the brand.
According to Nielson.com Americans spent nearly a quarter of their time online on social networking sites and blogs in 2010, up from 15.8 percent just a year earlier—a 43 percent increase. 40 percent of U.S. online time is spent on just three activities: social networking, playing games and emailing.

OK so you get the idea that social networking is popular, but are all demographics participating?  You might be surprised.  According to Pew Internet and American Life Research:

·      “Social networking use among internet users ages 50 and older has nearly doubled — from 22% to 42% over the past year.

·       Half (47%) of internet users ages 50-64 and one-in-four (26%) users ages 65 and older now use social networking sites.”

So how does all this impact your business?

According to MarketingSherpa research, marketers working in social media report an average 27% conversion rate for organic search traffic, while those not using social media reported a 17% rate. Adam T. Sutton concludes, “Clearly, search engine optimization is more effective at attracting attention and ultimately converting people. However, social media is more likely to increase positive thinking around a product and brand.”  This says a lot.

And if that wasn’t enough to get you thinking:

·     53% of people on Twitter recommend companies and/or products in their Tweets, with 48% of them delivering on their intention to buy the product. (ROI Research for Performance, June 2010)

·     44% of Moms use social media for brand/product recommendations; 73% trust online community recommendations. (BabyCenter LLC, July 2009)

·      A March 2009 study by Knowledge Networks found that between 10% and 24% of US social media users turned to social networks when making purchase decisions about various categories of products and services. (eMarketer, October 2009)

·     Facebook, blogs, Twitter and customer reviews are considered the most effective tactics for mobilizing consumers to talk up products online. (Etailing survey of 117 companies, September 2009)

So, what is making this strategy so successful with businesses? Simple social networking leads to authenticity and company transparency.  Why? Because now consumers have power their voice can finally be heard and in mass numbers.  Companies can no longer afford to sell poor quality products or provide poor customer service without the fear of thousands of negative reviews from dissatisfied customers.  Yup, and this is making companies take notice.  Conversely those companies with quality products and top notch customer service can reap the benefits.

We are in a new era in business and businesses can either embrace it and win or ignore it and lose.  Bottom line, trust is the new currency.  Social networking is forcing businesses to walk the talk. It’s making business and consumer relationships real again. And this authenticity is a very good thing.

What does this mean for you as a business owner? Simply put, opportunity.   You can now network with millions of people around the globe—most of whom you’d never meet any other way. You literally have access to unlimited prospects in your target market, connections with your customers both locally and globally.  Yup, I definitely hear the sound of opportunity knocking.

Bottom Line…

Transparency and authenticity are the keys to creating a successful business.  Combine that with Social networking and quality products and your bottom line will thank you!

She attended our courses and tours including a shamanic minga tour that helped her enjoy a full recovery physically.  See details of the May 2011 Shaman Minga Tour in Ecuador here.

Michelle took what she learned from our publishing courses and created her own successful global micro website.

Michelle wrote:  “I have some great news, my web site  http://healthy-holistic-living.com is now getting on average 2,000 visitors a day! Yup my little one man show web site now gets close to 60,000 visitors each month!  The power of the internet is amazing as well as the opportunities.  We have said it before but it deserves saying again the internet is truly the great equalizer.

“My web site is at a point now that it is growing without much effort and produces a nice passive income allowing me to continue working on my second site http://home-remedies-and-natural-cures.com and to get my third site up and running.  I am also working on various joint ventures with other web sites focusing on helping others start their own web business. I am doing monthly webinars helping disabled individuals start their own business on the Internet and will be starting a coaching club in the new year.  The opportunities are only limited by one’s imagination.

“Again I can not thank you and Merri enough, I look forward to many great adventures and new experiences in the coming years!”

99% of Michelle’s success is her work… her dedication… her striving towards a worthwhile goal.   Yet even if we added a tiny 1% to help her along the way. it is very fulfilling for us.

Here are the seven stories that show the rise of the SP man… or woman that can bring you secure income for the rest of your life. More importantly these stories can help you be happy and fulfilled and safe in this ever changing world.   With these seven case studies you help make the world a better place… in a small way perhaps… but better still as you gain everlasting wealth.

Photo taken by our son Jake as we rowed gently down the Oklawaha River. Row… Row… Your boat…. Gently Down the Stream.  Merrily, Merrily, Merrily, Life is but a Dream.

I’ll explain what SP stand for in a moment… and how SP can let rapid change gently create a fortune for you in the Dream Society.  Believe me you’ll find the meaning rewarding and SPecial…. because SP shows how you can have Sudden Progress as change accelerates and alters our daily lives in ways we can hardly imagine.

First let me introduce the prelude to seven stories in which lies the seeds… of prosperity, richness and satisfaction for you.

This prelude is  an excerpt from the December 16, 2010 Economist Article entitled “Rise of the image men” begins: (bolds are mine) that says:  As they prepared to face their second big strike in four years, America’s coal-mining bosses knew they had to do something about the newspapers. It was 1906—a time of rising resentment against robber-baron capitalism and the heyday of muckraking “yellow journalism”. During the previous strike the trade unions had fostered good relations with newspapermen and won themselves a sympathetic press. To help put their side of the story, the mining bosses turned to a former journalist, Ivy Lee.   Lee was to pioneer new methods—and, in the process, create a new industry.

Lee observed that the rise of national newspaper chains and syndicated journalism in America since the 1880s, combined with the extension of the franchise, had profoundly changed society. Now, for the first time, there was something that could accurately be called “public opinion”, a shared consciousness and conversation across the country—and it was to be feared. Lee noted how the emerging mass media were acting as the conduit for the anti-capitalist message of Progressivism, the liberalising reform movement that peaked in America in the early 20th century. He realised not only that it was essential for businesses to counter this message, but that the same conduit could be used to spread pro-business sentiment.

His idea, blindingly obvious now but a novelty then, was to send newsdesks a stream of statements putting the mining bosses’ case and rebutting allegations against them.

The seeds in this story, are rich with potential for your prosperity and are so simple. “Lee observed that the rise of national newspaper chains and syndicated journalism in America since the 1880s, combined with the extension of the franchise, had profoundly changed society. Now, for the first time, there was something that could accurately be called “public opinion”, a shared consciousness and conversation across the country—and it was to be feared.  This is obvious now but was a novelty then.

The real seed is that a coincidence of many technologies changed the world (in the form of the newspaper)… at the turn of the 20th century.  One technology was ability to make newsprint… the paper of newspapers.  Paper was two thousand years old.  A courtier named Ts’ai-Lun, from Lei-yang in China, was the first recorded inventor of paper circa 105 A.D. Ts’ai-Lun presented paper and a papermaking process to the Chinese Emperor and that was noted in the imperial court records.  But newsprint, paper from wood pulp, did not come along until 1838 when Charles Fenerty of Halifax made the first newsprint while helping a local paper mill maintain an adequate supply of rags to make paper.  He succeeded in making paper from the wood pulp itself.

New printing technology in the form of the offset press came in two versions: in 1875 by Robert Barclay of England  and in 1903 by Ira Washington Rubel of the United States for printing on paper.

Plus technologies in transportation and communication that allowed… everyone reporters to paperboys to create public opinion through the power of the word.

This leads us to the first of seven stories or case studies that tell the tale of a global transformation from broadcast to broad band… from Self Publishing to Specific Publishing and how you can have so many good things you desire… freedom… material wealth…adventure… security… fulfillment… friendships…. status and fun as The Specific Publisher.

The first case study begins with Samuel Langhorne Clemens better known as Mark Twain, who used the 1,900s technology to become a self publisher and one of the most famous American authors and humorists.

Twain was so famous that the US Post Office will publish a Mark Twain Forever Stamp to debut in 2011.

self-publishing-mark-twain

Not surprisingly Twain knew all the technology of that day since he apprenticed with a printer. He knew al about publishing because he worked as a typesetter and was a writer for a newspaper before turning to journalism. While a reporter, he wrote a humorous story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, which proved to be very popular and brought him nationwide attention. This led him to great success, praise and friendships with the common man as well as with presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.

The study will show the importance of True Service in publishing and Twain gave that for sure.  Twain was a moral man and made a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, but lost it all in bad investments leading him to bankruptcy. However he eventually overcame his financial troubles made sure that all his creditors were paid in full, even though his bankruptcy meant he did not have to repay them.

There was a mystical side to wain as well as he was born during a visit by Halley’s Comet and he died on its return. In fact in 1985 the US post office issued a stamp mark Twain and Hally’s Comet.

Twain’s continuing case study will show you how writer’s used new broadcast technology then to capture the power fo the press and become self publishers. Twain shows us self publishing at its best.

Then we jump to the case study and story #2 of James Patterson… one of the first Specific Publisher. Self publishers took over the role of publish their own works to broadcast them.

james-patterson-publishing

This photo from a www.Forbes.com article showing that Patterson earned $28 million last year with a power standing of 66th and rising.

Specific Publishers use broad band to publish to specific markets and even become co-publishers. The technology that has created Specific Publishing has such power that it allowed Patterson to reverse self publishing and dominate a publisher instead.

Patterson came from J Walter Thompson advertising and PR and writes or directs novels aimed at Specific Niches.  For example his novel “Lake House” was a rather odd novel with sympathetic characters being genetically altered children who are part bird. They have wings and fly.   I was surprised when I learned that this has been a huge  top selling success.

Why did this story do so well?

Patterson says it’s because there is a large niche of people who have a dream of wanting to fly.

An excerpt from a recent New York Times magazine article entitled “James Patterson Inc.” gives an example of just how profitable writing and Specific  Publishing can be when it says:

Like most authors, James Patterson started out with one book, released in 1976, that he struggled to get published. It sold about 10,000 copies, a modest, if respectable, showing for a first novel. Last year, an estimated 14 million copies of his books in 38 different languages found their way onto beach blankets, airplanes and nightstands around the world. Patterson may lack the name recognition of a Stephen King, a John Grisham or a Dan Brown, but he outsells them all. Really, it’s not even close. (According to Nielsen BookScan, Grisham’s, King’s and Brown’s combined U.S. sales in recent years still don’t match Patterson’s.) This is partly because Patterson is so prolific: with the help of his stable of co-authors, he published nine original hardcover books in 2009 and will publish at least nine more in 2010.

There are many different ways to catalog Patterson’s staggering success. Here are just a few: Since 2006, one out of every 17 novels bought in the United States was written by James Patterson. He is listed in the latest edition of “Guinness World Records,” published last fall, as the author with the most New York Times best sellers, 45, but that number is already out of date: he now has 51 — 35 of which went to No. 1.

Patterson and his publisher, Little, Brown & Co., a division of the Hachette Book Group, have an unconventional relationship. In addition to his two editors, Patterson has three full-time Hachette employees (plus assistants) devoted exclusively to him: a so-called brand manager who shepherds Patterson’s adult books through the production process, a marketing director for his young-adult titles and a sales manager for all his books.

Despite this support staff and his prodigious output, Patterson is intimately involved in the publication of his books.

A former ad executive — Patterson ran J. Walter Thompson’s North American branch before becoming a full-time writer in 1996 — he handles all of his own advertising and closely monitors just about every other step of the publication process, from the design of his jackets to the timing of his books’ release to their placement in stores.

“Jim is at the very least co-publisher of his own books,” Michael Pietsch, Patterson’s editor and the publisher of Little, Brown, told me.

Unsatisfied with publishing’s informal approach to marketing meetings, Patterson had expected corporate-style presentations, complete with comprehensive market-share data and sales trends.

Patterson has been a beneficiary of the industry’s shifting economics, but he was also a catalyst for change at Little, Brown and in the world of publishing in general. When Patterson published his breakout book, “Along Came a Spider,” in 1993, Little, Brown was still a largely literary house, whose more commercial authors included the historian William Manchester, biographer of Winston Churchill. Patterson’s success in the subsequent years encouraged Little, Brown to fully embrace mass-market fiction. But more than that, Patterson almost single-handedly created a template for the modern blockbuster author.

Patterson repeatedly challenged industry convention, sometimes over the objections of his own publisher. When Little, Brown was preparing to release “Along Came a Spider,” Patterson tried to persuade his publisher that the best way to get the book onto best-seller lists was to advertise aggressively on television.

Patterson is unusual… huge… and he is not purely self publishing, but many people are finding fulfillment, fun, and freedom and six figure incomes as information Specific Publishers.

You can use your writing skills to turn your passion into profit as a Specific Publisher!

The third and fourth case study stories are of Merri and me.

Merri became involved in self publishing over 40 years ago… first helping a veterinarian publish a book on a very specific market… animal acupuncture. Then she showed a needle point artist how to sell more books to an even more specific audience… “needle point enthusiasts”  about her needle point work to an audience larger than the population of the city she lived in.  This led Merri to eventually become Executive Editor of an award winning magazine in Florida.

My story is fourth… how specific publishing led me and allowed me to work and live from Hong Kong to London to Europe to Eastern Europe, then the Caribbean and then Ecuador… making millions in the process of following my adventures and having fun… while helping a large readership adapt to a rapidly changing world.

We’ll see how Specific Publishing has created exactly the lifestyle I desire with a farm in North Carolina, orange groves and home in Florida… hotel and condos in Ecuador working at what I love and enjoy.

Perhaps what Merri and I are most proud of are the fifth and sixth stories because they tell the tale of two students who used our publishing course Self Fulfilled How to be a Self Publisher.

Case Study Story #5:  David Cross.   David Cross was a meditation teacher in Edinburgh Scotland who taught our son Jake the art of meditating when Jake was at university there.   David ordered took out Self Fulfilled course then in print… now its online) and published a report.   One reader of the report who had a new internet server business was so impressed with the report that he hired David to work for him in Sweden.   In the process of rising to be a managing director of that firm… David started this website (and is still our webmaster as well as business partner now).  During one business meeting in London, David met our daughter Cinda. ‘Love at First Sight.”

David met executives of International Living and went on to become Cheof internet consultant for Agora Inc. omne of the largest online markting companies in the world.

David has since built an unparalleled, hands-on marketing experience that spans 25 years in 22 countries for companies and charities large and small. He’s guided many businesses and individuals to success in their business and helped them achieve their marketing goals, both online and offline.

As Senior Internet Consultant to Agora Inc. in Baltimore, MD, David worked closely with Agora’s publishers and marketers and over an 8-year period helped to propel Agora’s online revenues to over $300 Million in 2009.

Myles Norin, the CEO of Agoras wrote: “I have found David’s knowledge and experience unmatched in the industry. Without David’s expertise and guidance for the past 7 years, we would not be nearly as successful as we are.”

David hails from England and now lives on a small farm close to Mount Hood in Oregon with our daughter, a veterinarian, their five children and a menagerie of animals. When not marketing or brainstorming you’ll find David following a dream of self-sufficiency for food, power and water within 10 years, tending the land and caring for the farm and animals. Not surprisingly, David is an engaging and knowledgeable speaker with many amusing anecdotes from his work and travels over the years.

Such is the power that Specific Publishing brings.

The sixth case study story is about Michelle Toole.

Michelle was disabled when she ordered our self publishing course “Self Fulfilled – How to be a Self Publisher”.

A bit before the May 2010 update of this course, Michelle wrote:
