Jean Marie Butterlin, head of Ecuador A Team reports on Ecuador business ideas and a new Bahia Ecuador shopping center.

What was missing in Bahia?  A nice shopping center….and a nice sports bar !

Bahia is a very nice place to live.   The Ocean Bay condos  where we are going to live are almost finished.

Ocean Bay building

Ocean Bay in Bahia is almost complete.

Yet there are 4 things that have been missing in Bahia:

–    A shopping center with a supermarket
–    A nice American style sports bar
–    An expresso coffee shop
–    More boutique B&B’s.

We have just seen a few weeks ago the start of the construction of the Paseo Shopping Center right where the bridge ends in a new neighborhood with a nice boardwalk.

This will be a large shopping center.

Although Bahia has a Tia Market and a few smaller “tiendas”, we have had to go to Manta every couple of weeks to get to SuperMaxi or Mi Comisariato in order to find the kind of products we are accustomed to having in the US.

We had heard many rumors over the last year about Mi Comisariato and SuperMaxi coming to Bahia.   We even knew where they had leased or bought land but there had been no announcements.

Now it seems that construction has already begun and should be finished by the end of the year (both Mi Comisariato and SuperMaxi have their own building companies , therefore construction should run smoothly and swiftly).

This will change the attractiveness of the whole area as more and more people will come to shop in Bahia from San Clemente to Jama.

As far as a nice sports bar is concerned, this is a nice opportunity for someone who has some experience.  The sports bars in other cities are doing very well as not only expats but also with the Ecuadorians who love sports (esp. soccer).

I witnessed the first opening (2nd store) of Whole Foods in Houston in the mid eighties and the one thing that brought people into it was the expresso coffee machine!

For many expats the Manabi style coffee does not do well….there are only a couple of restaurant that have expresso machines but in the morning a little coffee bar that would serve expresso, lattes, capucinos would do well.  The new Ocean Bay Towers has a small “tienda” that is ready to be leased out to someone who has a vision.

Another nice business opportunity is in the B&B area.  Bahia lacks hotel rooms especially in the busy holiday season.   Bahia is proud to have one of the best boutique hotels in Ecuador Casa Ceibo ($200+/night).   We also have a nice hotel on the malecon “La Piedra” where many of our clients stay ($55+tax with with Ecuador Living discount /no breakfast).   Casa Grande is also a nice seven room boutique hotel close to the beach. ($85 + tax with Ecuador Living discount discount including breakfast for two).

I have seen the need for an upper class B&B in Bahia, where one could stay longer term (1 to 180 days) at a good rate, but with all the amenities of a nice hotel i.e. private bathrooms, 24/7 security, pool, jacuzzi, sauna, fitness room, cable TV, high speed internet, A/C, Washer/dryer, fawcet drinking water – the building has its own desalinisation plant and power generator- and….. the view, right in front of the beach !

Such a place will open on September 1st in the soon to be finished building on the malecon in front of La Piedra ; the 3 room B&B can be leased by the room and by the night. Clients will share a fully equipped kitchen, and a social area.

Services are the same than in a hotel except no meals are served. The price will be right in between a Hostal and the hotel La Piedra just nearby.

Jean Marie.
