Andean Brain Fitness

There is a connection between fitness and the brain.

We need a clear mind and healthy, fit body to correctly follow our destiny.   Modern lifestyles often make this hard.  Poor food, too little exercise and too much stress are often the staples in our daily diet!

In times past almost everyone exercised… because living took more physical effort.

Chasqui-runners

During the Incan civilization, the word was spread through the empire by Chasqui Warriors who ran along the Capac Nan (Inca trail).  They were obviously very fit and had active minds.  They not only had to run long distances but also had to memorize the message so it could be passed from runner to runner without too much distortion.

Part of their mental alertness may have been due to their fitness.  There is scientific evidence that some exercise enhances the brain and helps us have clear minds as well as diminishes the likelihood of dementia.

The April 28 edition of New York Times Sunday Magazine has an article entitled “The fitness Oracle” by Gretchen Reynolds.  In the article is a Q&A from an interview with Dr. Martin Gibala, chairman of the department of kinesiology at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario Canada.

A question is asked what is a good addition to cardio exercise to maintain brain health and ward off dementia.   The reply was that a couple of weight training sessions might help.  Studies in lab animals show that moderate aerobic exercise, (the equivalent of jogging) doubles or even triples the number of new neurons in the brain’s memory center compared with brains of sedentary animals.

The article then said:  But other recent science suggests that resistance training also has brain benefits that may be unique, meaning that if you don’t lift weights, you could be missing out.  In a particularly relevant 2012 study, rats with weights tied to their tails climbed ladders to simulate resistance training, while others ran on little treadmills or didn’t exercise.  After eight weeks, both exercise groups performed much better than the sedentary animals on a memory test, but the brains of the weight-lifting and treadmill-running rats were subtly different.  The weight trainers showed higher levels of one particular brain protein than the runners or the sedentary animals; and the runners’ brains now displayed higher levels of another protein.  Both substances are thought to spark the creation of new connections in the brain and improve the health of existing ones. So having more of either protein is desirable for brain health, but it appears that the surest way to have more of both is to practice both endurance and weight training.

One connection to weight lifting and the brain is MSM.

If you do lift weights, MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), may provide raw materials the body needs in order to make cartilage.  MSM is a pure, organic, non-toxic, non-metallic element that occurs widely in nature. It’s a metabolite of the compound dimethysulfoxide, and by weight is 34% elemental sulfur, making it one of the richest sources of sulfur. As the eighth most abundant element in all living organisms, sulfur is found in more than 150 types of bodily compounds, from enzymes and tissues to hormones and antioxidants. It’s also a component of structural protein, the type found in hair, skin, and joints. Sulfur also occurs in connective tissue, in a key structural component called collagen. (Collagen helps form cartilage.)

Healthy.net describes how sulfur helps the brain and says (bolds are mine):  Sulfur is present in four amino acids: methionine, an essential amino acid; the nonessential cystine and cysteine, which can be made from methionine; and taurine, which is not part of body tissues but does help produce bile acid for digestion. But overall, sulfur is most important as part of protein.

Sulfur is important to cellular respiration, as it is needed in the oxidation-reduction reactions that help the cells utilize oxygen, which aids brain function and all cell activity.

These reactions are dependent on cysteine, which also helps the liver produce bile secretions and eliminate other toxins. L-cysteine is thought to generally help body detoxification mechanisms through the tripeptide compound, glutathione.

As part of four amino acids, sulfur performs a number of functions in enzyme reactions and protein synthesis. It is necessary for formation of collagen, the protein found in connective tissue in our bodies. Sulfur is also present in keratin, which is necessary for the maintenance of the skin, hair, and nails, helping to give strength, shape, and hardness to these protein tissues. Sulfur is also present in the fur and feathers of other animals. The cystine in hair gives off the sulfur smell when it is burned. Sulfur, as cystine and methionine, is part of other important body chemicals: insulin, which helps regulate carbohydrate metabolism, and heparin, an anticoagulant. Taurine is found in bile acids, used in digestion. The sulfur-containing amino acids help form other substances as well, such as biotin, coenzyme A, lipoic acid, and glutathione. The mucopoly-saccharides may contain chondroitin sulfate, which is important to joint tissues.

Sulfur for the mind and muscle makes sense as each requires protein.

We all have a path to destiny that we can walk.  We are more likely to take this positive journey if our mind is clear and our body is fit.   Some light weight training may help us enjoy this journey.

Merri and I ensure our sulfur supply with the Magnesium MSM spray below.  For us, it is instantly active and wonderful for aches and pain relief.

Magnesium With MSM Sulfur

One alternative health care tip is…Magnesium.  Merri and I have lived and studied for decades with great healers steeped in ancient wisdom on how to have good natural health.  We try to integrate the knowledge we learned in a practical Western way… every day and incorporate our experience into all of our seminars and courses.  To us… wealth and good health are inseparable… integral parts of the whole.

Sometimes readers report incredible results and their health gain benefits outweigh the other parts of the course.

For example, our webmaster wrote:   What turned out to be sciatica rippled spasms of excruciating pain from my lower back down my right leg to my calf, Achilles tendon and toes through day and night. It was agonizing and grated on my nerves worse than toothache. Or childbirth. (Perhaps.)

I tried massage, yoga and a local chiropractor, none of which helped. And I was now starting to take NSAIDs daily just to keep the pain at bay which I didn’t like.

Fortunately, Merri saw me wince as I sat down for dinner one evening.

“Sciatica,” I said.

“Try Magnesium. Let me remember what else could work.”

That evening Merri emailed me this note: “B-1, B-12, B-6 – taken by themselves. And all around good B Vitamin complex. To make sure that the B vitamins bind, you need magnesium.  I like Natural Calm in crystal form.  This means you take it in very warm water before you go to bed and work on it to move up as much as you can and then back off when it causes a runny stool.

“Add these together and you’ve got a permanent release from stress as well as stress buildup, which brings on so many things…such as sciatica. A B-12 shot right into the beginning spot of the pain (usually on the buttocks) will stop the pain instantly but only the continual use of B vitamins plus magnesium will prevent its return.  You don’t need the shot and although I wouldn’t take it, perhaps some would benefit instantly by it.”

I started taking this immediately. 4 days later I woke after a full night’s sleep with no pain. I’ve continued to take Natural Calm daily and am now taking B vitamins.

I get the occasional twinge if I’ve been driving for more than a few hours or after a day sitting in my office but the excruciating pain I experienced for weeks has completely passed and I’m amazed at the results this. Thank you Merri!    David

Another with sciatica gave magnesium a try and had great results and shared this note.   Dear Gary, For eight years I suffered sciatica due to a car accident. A recent newsletter mentioned Merri providing information on magnesium and vitamin B to alleviate a similiar problem.  I have been using the same supplements for a month. The sciatica is completely healed. Thank you.
Best Regards

I have attended your tours, courses, and events because I place a premium on learning and health.  My energy level has increased since the last Mt Dora event and I would not want to go backwards. As always, thanks for your insight and wisdom.

Notes like this make all our efforts so rewarding but there is much more!

Excerpts from the Magnesium Miracles report says:  A Growing Body of Evidence Suggests  that Magnesium Plays a Pivotal Role in Reducing Cardiovascular Risks and may Be Involved in the Pathogenesis of Diabetes itself. (See a link to the full article below).

By Dr. Jerry L. Nadler

Magnesium improves and helps correct insulin sensitivity, which is the fundamental defect that characterizes pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome and even full-blown diabetes and heart disease.  An intracellular enzyme called tyrosine kinaserequires magnesium to allow insulin to exert its blood-sugar-lowering effects.  In several studies, daily oral magnesium supplementation substantially improved insulin sensitivity by 10 percent and reduced blood sugar by a huge 37 percent.

Improved insulin sensitivity from magnesium replacement can markedly reduce triglyceride levels.  Reduced triglyceride availability, in turn, reduces triglyceride-rich particles, such as very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and small low-density lipoprotein (small LDL), both of which are powerful contributors to heart disease.  Magnesium supplementation can also raise levels of beneficial high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Merri and I believe in the power of magnesium supplements both oral and transdermal.

Anytime we can’t sleep or are feeling pain we spray on the magnesium. We started looking for a good product we could use and share and convinced our friend Dr. Jim Vigue to add a magnesium spray to his Athlete’s Best supplement line. Many of our readers are very impressed with their Premium Omega-3 Plus product, so we knew Dr. Jim could come up with a high quality magnesium topical spray as well.

He did even better than we asked and created the Athletes Best Ultra Pure Magnesium Oil With Msm

Jim sent this note:  Are you Magnesium Deficient? Can this be a major Health Crisis? A 2006 report from the World Health Organization estimated that 75% of adults consume a diet that is deficient in magnesium. Do you suffer from any of the following?

•    Fatigue
•    Low Energy
•    Irritability
•    Hormonal Imbalance
•    Sleep Issues
•    Constipation
•    Muscle Cramps
•    Hyperactivity
•    Anxiety
•    Poor Memory
•    Headaches
•    Weak Bones
•    Abnormal Heart Rate
•    Central Obesity
•    Stress
•    Insulin Sensitivity

All of these health issues are related to low magnesium. Magnesium plays an important role in the body, being required for more than 300 enzymatic reactions including those involved in the synthesis of fat, protein and nucleic acids, neurological activity, muscular contraction and relaxation, cardiac activity, bone metabolism and cellular energy.

Athlete’s Best™ Ultra Pure Magnesium Oil with MSM is the gold standard for quick and efficient restoration of intracellular magnesium levels. Our formula contains a high concentration of 100% naturally occurring magnesium chloride and other trace minerals, and also incorporates the unique synergistic benefits of MSM. As a topical, MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) enhances cell membrane permeability and may facilitate more efficient uptake of magnesium ions.

Magnesium impacts nearly all of systems of the body due to its cellular and molecular function. As a fundamental ion in the body (a charged particle soluble in water) magnesium is utilized in key chemical reactions on a microscopic level throughout the body’s cells, including its vital role as a co-factor to over 300 enzyme functions, and its role in DNA and RNA stability. Magnesium functions as a regulator of electrolyte balance, metabolism, and other biochemical reactions.

Magnesium:

•    Is an important factor in muscle relaxation and heart health
•    Allows nerves to send messages in the brain and nervous system
•    Aids and regulates the body’s use of calcium and other minerals
•    Assists in bone and teeth formation
•    Regulates the metabolism of nutrients such as protein, nucleic acids, fats and carbohydrates
•    Regulates cholesterol production and helps modulate insulin sensitivity
•    Assists in energy production, DNA transcription and protein synthesis
•    Maintains the structural health of cell membranes throughout the body

Healthy magnesium levels have been linked to lowered blood pressure, reduced incidence of type II diabetes, emergency migraine treatment, reduced symptoms of asthma, and improved memory.

The Wonders of Magnesium!

It also restores DHEA levels, reduces stress by blocking the hormone adrenalin, it is an effective antiseptic, lowers pulse rate, reduces headaches, and calms you down in our stressful society. Today with alcohol, poor soil, processed foods, sodas, less sleep, too much coffee and pharmaceutical drugs, our magnesium levels are lower than ever. Transdermal Magnesium will not build up in your body; your body will only absorb what it needs.

Why include MSM in the Athlete’s Best formula?

As a topical, MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) enhances cell membrane permeability and may facilitate more efficient uptake of magnesium ions.

A dietary sulfur is something our body absolutely needs, but doesn’t get enough of. MSM is in all living things and aids in the proper formation of proteins associated with connective tissues, hormones and antibodies.

MSM is extremely volatile – cooking destroys it and plants start to lose it the moment they are picked, so most people are extremely deficient in it.

MSM is needed for the formation of collagen, which makes up over 30% of the protein in our body. Collagen is needed for skin integrity and elasticity.

MSM is also important for hormones, enzymes, antibodies, antioxidants, tissues and body proteins. MSM contributes to healthy hair, nails, skin softness and encourages repair of damaged skin by stimulating production on collagen.

MSM does wonders for scar tissue by helping remove cross-linking in skin protein tissues- meaning it also helps with wrinkles. MSM is often used for muscle and joint pain stopping pain impulses before they reach the brain. It’s made from a naturally produced form of DMSO (dimethyl sulfide).

·         It increases blood circulation and maintains acid-alkaline balance.

·         It boosts natural detoxification.

·         It boosts immunity by helping the body produce immunoglobulins (antibodies).

·         MSM & DMSO dissolves inorganic calcium from arteries, heart, lungs.

·         Difficult internal and external scar tissue and burns can be broken down and repaired with MSM.

·         It increases the absorption of all food nutrients and supplements taken within 12 hours.

·         Sulfur causes fat to disperse in the bloodstream preventing fat from clumping in the blood.

·         Sulfur plays a major role in bile fluid, the brain, connective tissue, hair, liver, nails and skin.

·         Sulfur is the foundational mineral of all beauty… the best cosmetic in the world.

·         Sulfur regulates the sodium/potassium electrolyte balance in and out of the cell. This makes the cell more permeable and better able to drive nutrients into, and waste out of the cell.

·         Sulfur helps relieve pain and inflammation by allowing waste products to be flushed out of the cell. Every time the body removes toxins from the cell, it also removes a sulfur compound that neutralizes the toxin. Therefore, sulfur is a vital mineral in the detoxification process.

·         Four major amino acids- methionine, cysteine, cystine and taurine depend heavily on sulfur.

·         It can help relieve constipation.

·         It helps heal burns and scars.

·         Hypoglycemia is associated with a deficiency of sulfur at some level

·         Sulfur provides elasticity, movement, healing and repair within tissues. Sulfur reduces lactic acid buildup and has the ability to possibly eliminate muscle, leg and back cramps.

Adequate sulfur levels in the diet can increase recovery in athletes by 75%.

·         MSM helps to alleviate pollen and food allergies. MSM neutralizes foreign proteins, such as pollen allergens very fast.

·         MSM has been shown to reverse arthritic conditions by improving joint flexibility, reducing inflammation, reducing arthritic pain, and by breaking up scar tissue.

·         MSM lotion almost immediately neutralizes mosquito and insect bites because of its ability to neutralize foreign proteins.

This new Ultra Pure Magnesium Oil with MSM is transdermal or “topical” magnesium.

Transdermal magnesium is a powerful tool in the battle against magnesium deficiency.
Benefits reported by those who use transdermal applications of magnesium relate specifically to its therapeutic application on the skin and its direct absorption into the cells:

Increased sleep

Reduced muscle aches, pains, cramping and spasms

Healthy skin and reduced outbreaks of eczema and psoriasis

Better relaxation and stress management

Increased energy levels and improved moods

Increased athletic performance

It is also:

▪    Safe, convenient, affordable and effective.

▪    Allows you to maximize the amount you’re getting daily without having to worry about diarrhea, digestion, or swallowing additional pills several times a day.

▪    Is especially helpful with pain and can be applied directly to the trouble area with immediate results, rather than waiting for it to work its way through your GI tract.

The nutrients in the Ultra Pure Magnesium Oil with MSM are able to pass through the porous surface of the skin, and eventually end up in your blood stream.Topical magnesium takes advantage of the absorptive properties of body’s largest organ, putting it to work for you in the form of a simple spray.
