I moved to Ecuador at the end of Summer 2008 and started out in Cuenca. Cuenca was very nice and we enjoyed living there …… BUT the cold and rain was more than we expected. We wanted the warm sunny weather. So we began our search for a home on the COAST .

By the end of 2009 we had bought our home in Puerto Cayo. We had been through almost every small town, from Salinas in the south, ALL the way to Canoa in the North. Once we saw Puerto Cayo , it became our benchmark for what we were looking for. All other towns were measured against Puerto Cayo. When we were looking for a home , we had thought that there would be a community or development in the area that we could buy in. NOT the case. So we bought an individual house and settled in. We lived on a public street with a Malecon in front of our house. This means that anyone could park in front of our house and turn up their music, and have a party until late into the night. I couldn’t help at times, but think of how nice it would be to have a private community and gated access to the beach. In the spring of 2011 we began our hunt for the perfect area to build a Beach Front, Gated Community. Puerto Cayo was, hands down, the best location that we found, so we didn’t want to venture too far away from this wonderful area .

We started with a 37 lot development called Las Palmas. With underground utilities and the amenities to make life at the beach a pleasure, we sold out in just over 1 year . Las Palmas offered what no other property in the area had ever offered ….. affordable lots with wonderful amenities like a clubhouse, pool, sidewalks, gated entrance, 24 hr security, full time gardener, and more. We are very proud of the success and end product of our first development. I am not going to sugar coat it ….. we learned A LOT on that 1st project in Ecuador .

We were able to employ local workers and tradesmen. This has had a MAJOR impact on the community. In some cases , families of 6 , 7 , or 8 people are supported by the growth of our communities. We have had great success with training the local craftsmen to build with a higher quality and as close to North American standards as possible .


This knowledge and training proved invaluable when we started our second community, Palmera Beach  in the spring of 2013.  Palmera Beach is a 33 lot community with similar amenities. Within 6 months we were 65% sold out and are on schedule to be sold out in just over 1 year ! In our second development we were able to streamline some of the process and offer a better product. By knowing our contractors better and knowing what works in the local construction we have been able to offer what we feel is the highest quality construction around. We are almost finished with the sidewalks and underground utility installations and will finish the pool, clubhouse, and gym areas soon.

We DO NOT investigate properties when they are advertised so be sure to complete your due diligence.  Always use an independent Ecuador attorney who represents you (not the seller) when you buy real estate in Ecuador. We also recommend that you rent, become familiar with Ecuador before you buy.
